As I prepare myself for the upcoming semester, I recap my summer music highlights. While packing up my bags I can't help but think of the amazing trip up to NY for Camp Bisco 9, and all the rediculous people we met at my 3rd camp bisco (Smokin' Joe... you were pretty awesome). I recall the trip down to philly to see sts9 and Lotus, and crashing the afterparty to witness my favorite show of the summer. Big Gigantic. These guys kick ass. I had checked them out at Bisco and had a great time, but among the other amazing talent (Bassnectar, Pretty Lights, Tipper, ect..) My opinion towards them kindof blended into a giant opinion of the weekend.
However, seeing them late night in philly blew my mind. Big Gigantic is an all star show in a simple setup: Drummer (Jeremy Salken), Sax (Dominic Lalli), and a laptop with beats. What sets them apart from other shows of the summer, for me, was Lalli on the Sax. The blend of fresh beats, a steady percussion, and a filthy Sax makes for a completly unexpected surprise. Lalli will make you swirl with his funky instrumentals, as he sweats every drop for the crowd, bouncing back and forth between laptop and Sax. far and away my favorite show of the summer. Here's their big hit, a seemingly standard remix of the outplayed Aloe Blacc that will have you dancing your toes thin:
Aloe Blacc - I Need A Dollar (Big Gigantic Remix) by Stoop Kid
Their album "Fire It Up" is also a hell of a production worth checking out. Here are my two favorite Highlights from the album:
Big Gigantic - High Life by DJ Pandy
Big Gigantic - Polarize by AlwaysHustle
The song titles pretty much speak for themselve. Both songs are very smooth but bumpin tracks to enjoy. Also be sure to check out their upcoming album "A Place Behind the Moon," which comes out a week from today, 9/1/10. For more info you can check out their site here.
